The movie was originally scheduled to be released last November on the 400th anniversary of England's Guy Fawkes Day, but the summer's London subway bombings left Warner Bros. There are a number of quietly astringent messages in this likable chapter book, particularly in the two turning points in Miss Slade's life: losing an eye as a child in a Guy Fawkes Day fireworks accident, which later rendered her a recluse; and the friendship with the Reader family, which helps her establish some affectionate new connections and give up her more deleterious idiosyncrasies (she buys a new caravan, with running water). Today, thanks to my efforts, the Ides is almost as popular in Southern California as Guy Fawkes Day. |
