I believe he served on HMS Watchman, HMS Impregnable and others.
He ran away to sea in 1914 served as a boy seaman on HMS Impregnable at Plymouth, learned the art of holystoning decks and later the onerous job of coaling ship, emerging as a seaman gunner on a Monitor (a shallow draught ship) in 1917 in Russia when the Bolsheviks were striving for power and sueing for peace with the Germans.
A naval squadron including HMS Queen Charlotte, HMS Impregnable and five Dutch frigates had to destroy the Algerian fleet to get them to stop their trade in European Christians
