n. Abbr. HPV
Any of various strains of papovavirus that cause warts, especially of the hands, feet, and genitals, with some strains believed to be a causative factor in cancer of the cervix, vagina, and vulva.

human papillomavirus  (pp-lm-vrs)
A virus of the genus Papillomavirus, certain strains of which cause skin and genital warts in humans or are associated with various cancers, including cancers of the cervix, vagina, and larynx.

More recently, information systems have evolved to a rules-based ordering mechanism whereby HPV test orders are placed based on many different factors: patient age, previous HPV result, and ordering clinician preference--just a few examples of the factors considered by newer ordering algorithms.
The other type of HPV test is called genotyping and tests for many single types of HPV.
There are now several available commercial HPV tests and most of these tests show a sensitivity (the proportion of true positives correctly identified) in the order of 95 per cent for high grade lesions, whereas cytology is somewhere between 50-70 per cent.
