The blood lily, Haemanthus katharinae , is another easy-going type with the bonus in summer of spectacular spherical flower heads, sometimes 20cm (8in) across, composed of around 100 tiny red blooms.
It is Haemanthus coccineus, considered the most unusual species of blood lily - a South African bulb.
