Far from being nailed to a cross and mourned by his weeping mother, the typical Byzantine Christ in the mosaics of Haghia Sophia or the Church of the Dormition is enthroned, either as a child sitting bolt upright on his mother's knee or as ruler of heaven.
It may be known as the 'scenic' part of Istanbul, as it is home to architectural masterpieces, such as the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, the Haghia Sophia and Topkapi Palace, but this also means that it is overrun by tourists, tour buses, tourist orientated restaurants and tourist prices.
