Onondagan leader who, along with Deganawidah, is credited with the organization of the Iroquois confederacy. His name was given to the hero of Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha (1855).

Named after the famous squaw whose name translates as "Laughing Water", legend has it she and Indian brave Haiwatha threatened to jump off the top of the waterfall when the head of their rival tribes banned them from marrying.
