Company spokesman Dick Starmann said the company had asked that McDonald's corporate flag be lowered to half staff at all McDonald's outlets until Friday.
The union flag was brought to half staff at civic buildings in South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Newcastle as a mark of respect and more than 100,000 council employees stopped working.
