Hal·sey  (hôlz), William Frederick Known as "Bull." 1882-1959.
American naval officer who during World War II led American naval forces to several important victories, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf (1944). On September 2, 1945, the Japanese formally surrendered aboard his flagship, the USS Missouri.
