TURTLE NESTING - From January to June you may get the chance to observe Greenback and Hawksbill sea turtles nesting, laying eggs or hatching on a special section of the resort's beaches.
Made from individual plates of hawksbill sea turtle shells that are heated in water, molded into bowls, and polished to highlight the shell's natural patterns, toluk are carved with minimal decoration around the rim.
But Sea Mountain Five LLC, a collaboration of California and Big Island investors, recently proposed building a 2,000-unit resort complex on the beach, and environmentalists fear this could spell trouble for critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles.
