heavy ion
n.
1. The nucleus of a heavy element. When such nuclei are caused to collide at high velocities, new elements are created.
2. A charged microscopic particle that forms when an ion attaches to a dust mote or similar object.

heavy ion
1. The nucleus of a heavy element, such as gold. Collisions of heavy ions are induced in particle accelerators to explore the internal structure quark structure of the nuclei; recent experiments suggest that the extremely high temperatures generated by such collisions can create a short-lived plasma of quarks and gluons.
2. A charged microscopic particle that forms when ions attach to a dust mote or similar object.

Sigurd Hoffmann from Germany's Centre for Heavy Ion Research, are also responsible for adding "super-heavy" elements 107-111 to the table already.
Professor Sigurd Hofmann's team at the Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in the western city of Darmstadt created the new element by firing a beam of charged zinc ions at lead atoms to form the nucleus of the new element, provisionally called 112.
The book is suitable for graduate students and experienced researchers in science and technology disciplines where fast ion-atom collisions are used, such as accelerator-based physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion, space research, and therapy of cancer patients by heavy ions.
