A province of extreme northeast China bordering on Russia. It was under Japanese control from 1932 to 1945. Harbin is the capital. Population: 36,200,000.

Last Saturday, 108 miners were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Heilongjiang province in northeastern China, reigniting concerns about safety standards in the nation's coal mines.
Rescuers recovered 12 more bodies, a spokesman for the mine in northeastern China's Heilongjiang province said, leaving four miners still unaccounted for after the weekend blast.
Some 60 others were injured in the blast, which ripped through the Xinxing Coal Mine in Hegang City, Heilongjiang Province, around 2:30 a.
