While living in Lhasa before the Chinese storm broke, Norbu and the young Dalai Lama became friendly with the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, who had just completed the long trek from India.
At age eleven he met Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer after spying him in Lhasa through his telescope.
Byline: MARK BRITTAIN THE death at the age of 93 of Heinrich Harrer last Saturday was widely reported in the British press for two reasons: One that the Austrian had been a close friend and mentor of the Dalai Lama, and subsequently written a book about his experience, Seven Years in Tibet, on which the film starring Brad Pitt had been based' and the other that the last 10 years or so of his life had been blighted by his forced admission that he had once been a Nazi.
