Due acknowledgement needs to be given to the important role of the early Greek-speaking church and Hellenisation during the period in question.
The objective was to repeat in Cyprus the process of Hellenisation that had wiped out the Turkish communities of other eastern Mediterranean islands such as Crete and Rhodes in the earlier part of the century.
