Hampl turns her artist's eye to "greatness" in the likes of Henri Matisse and Katherine Mansfield (whose work Virginia Woolf deemed, "the only writing I have ever been jealous of").
It included the largest collection of African art in private hands, and works by such legendary artists as Jean-Michael Basquiat, Alexander Calder, Stuart Davis, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Red Grooms, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Ferdnand Leger, Richard Lindner, Jaques Lipchitz, Reginald Marsh, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Henry Moore, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso and Augeste Rodin.
This element of abstraction in African art (often seen in traditional masks or wood, ivory, stone, and other carvings), as well as reliance on bold dramatic color, was extremely influential in the development of modem art, inspiring such masters as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Amadeo Modigliani (4).
