Both the Monastic tradition as well as the hesychast tradition both use repeated prayer as part of their practices.
The idea that one could experience theosis in this life was at the heart of what became known as the hesychast controversy, from the Greek hesychia, or "stillness.
It is the home of the Hesychast approach to prayer, and one of its most illustrious nineteenth-century monks is the compiler of the Philocalia.
