In conjunction with thallium imaging or dobutamine stress echocardiography, D-ribose supplementation has been used to enhance detection of hibernating myocardium.
Hibernating myocardium is the term used to refer to segments rendered dysfunctional secondary to chronic ischemia.
Therefore, a combination of techniques to evaluate several of these parameters is generally used clinically in considering if repetitively stunned or hibernating myocardium exists as a cause of reversible left ventricular dysfunction, warranting coronary revascularization.
