French philosopher and historian who was a leading exponent of positivism and wrote the six-volume Origins of Contemporary France (1875-1893).

He applied determinist criteria to the study of literature, art, history, and psychology, regarding them as products of environment and race. His works include Histoire de la littérature anglaise (1863-64) and Les Origines de la France contemporaine (1875-93)

But the last word must go to the superbly named Hippolyte Taine who quipped that standard guidebooks were like "the interior of the English head, many facts and few ideas.
Occasionally one wonders at the odd omission such as Avery Craven or Hippolyte Taine.
For the latter notion he cites Hippolyte Taine, and on memory he draws inspiration and ideas from the work of Francis Yates and Pierre Nora as well as Henri Bergson.
