Hofstadter, Anti-Intellectualism In American Life (New York, 1966), 17.
Brown, an associate professor of history at Elizabethtown College, has written an account worthy of Hofstadter himself: wry, humane, and illuminating.
Though Hofstadter has been repeatedly critiqued for limiting political paranoia to a too-narrow spectrum of American politics, his pointed critique of far-right conspiracy theories nevertheless indicates the fearful history of conspiracy theory in the United States, which is often marked by xenophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, and misogyny.
