Lopez is a santero, a maker of carved and painted images of saints in the Spanish colonial tradition, a master of many other colonial art forms, such as metalwork and furniture, a reviver of neglected traditions including hide painting and silver holloware, a scholar and teacher, and a former art-gallery owner with his wife, artist Nance Lopez.
Then, when he returned home to South Africa, he and a friend who had a holloware company developed the current design.
