homeobox  (hm--bks)
Any of various DNA sequences containing about 180 nucleotides that encode for corresponding sequences of usually 60 amino acids, called homeodomains, found in proteins that bind DNA and regulate gene transcription. Genes containing homeoboxes are found in all eukaryotic genomes and are associated with cell differentiation and bodily segmentation during embryologic development.

According to background information in the report, the SHOX gene (short stature homeobox gene) is responsible for the normal growth of bones, and is often mutated in short-stature patients-no more than 160 cm of final height in men, and 150 cm in women.
Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH) has patented a novel growth arrest homeobox gene and the nucleotide sequences determined in both the rat and the human.
The mice have a mutated version of one of the homeobox, or Hox, genes, which scientists have implicated in embryo development.
