A strategic waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. The narrow strait controls oceangoing traffic to and from the oil-rich Gulf States.

The worse scenario goes well beyond conventional economics and would occur if for instance the Straits of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf were to be closed.
