Presented from the point of view of eight-year-old Henry Travis and Chinese immigrant Chin, son of the Travises' houseboy, events move quickly from the April evening preceding the quake through the early morning rumble and collapsing buildings, the three days and nights of tire and chaos, and the beginning of resettlement.
Even when she was a simple country girl singing and playing guitar with Porter Wagoner, she looked vaguely like a Fire Island houseboy with a stuffed bra.
