The rescue and subsequent loss of life from two Hoylake families was long thought to be just a tale passed through the generations.
More than 350 RNLI supporters and local dignitaries joined the Hoylake lifeboat crew for Saturday's ceremony and service of dedication of their new lifeboat station, which has been part-funded by a pounds 2m fundraising appeal.
The RAF daredevils were the star attraction at the RNLI Hoylake and West Kirby Lifeboat open day, rounding off the event in the late afternoon.
