In April 2005, standing under a huppa at a Dominican Republic resort, Lake and Katzman were married. A billowing swath of sheer fabric first represents the mikvah, the traditional ritual bath Jewish women take before getting married; then the dektikhl, the bride's veil; and finally the huppa, a Jewish wedding canopy. She may well be able to recite the sheva berakhot at the end of a wedding meal, but she cannot be a witness under the huppa. |
