Any of various strains of papovavirus that cause warts, especially of the hands, feet, and genitals, with some strains believed to be a causative factor in cancer of the cervix, vagina, and vulva.

human papillomavirus  (pp-lm-vrs)
A virus of the genus Papillomavirus, certain strains of which cause skin and genital warts in humans or are associated with various cancers, including cancers of the cervix, vagina, and larynx.

Although cervical-cancer screening has improved significantly since the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of HPV DNA detections assays--the Hybrid Capture 2 assay (HC2) and the SPF10 assay, for the detection of carcinogenic HPV--with cytology for primary screening, carcinogenic HPV testing has one critical limitation: poor positive predictive value.
22 The current study was undertaken to compare ProEx C immunocytochemical staining and the Hybrid Capture 2 hr-HPV DNA test (Digene Corporation, Gaithersburg, Md) in detecting high-grade cervical disease using liquidbased SurePath (Becton, Dickinson and Company, Franklin Lakes, NJ) cytologic specimens positive for ASC-US.
It is a spinoff of a lab technology called Hybrid Capture 2.
