| Results were fairly similar, with some hydrocarbons a little higher in the West Valley tests and some a little lower, officials said. Lin Yan and George Helou of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and their colleagues used an infrared spectrometer on the Spitzer Space Telescope to find the hydrocarbons in distant galaxies that undergo spurts of intense star formation. What they've found may someday result in a commercial product that could remove hydrocarbons and other stubborn hazardous compounds such as chemical warfare agents, explosives, and insecticides from solid materials. |
