Actual construction is a couple of years away -- but when it's put together, sometime in the next four or five years, the "Tres Amigas SuperStation" out in Clovis will speed the electricity generated by wind, solar and hydroelectric generators back and forth from the East, West and Texas interconnections, which come closest to each other near the Texas border.
State-of-the-art science involves pumping water to a higher altitude lake during off-peak times and letting it drain down through hydroelectric generators during peak times.
He argues that the lack of storage possibilities for electricity, combined with water storage options (he presumes no storage issues for gas), means that hydroelectric generators will shift production from peak to off-peak periods relative to the case of perfect competition.
