| There is a short horizontal shaft and hypoid gear set that send power to the prop shaft, then to the rear drive unit. An SAE paper (#820696; Neil Lottridge and Robert Grindahl) summarized the results of the testing done by GMC's Pontiac Div from 1971-1977 on nodular iron hypoid gears for automobile rear axles. Identical direct electromagnetic clutch units on ether side of the rear drive unit's hypoid gear control the amount of torque that reaches each rear wheel, and act as the limited-slip differential. |
