There are exceptional pieces, such as Yoruba gelede masks and ibeji figures, Ekoi and Ibibio masks and statues, and Cameroonian hats, among the West African selections. The Aro people, an amalgam of several Igbo, Ibibio, and Cross River ethnic elements, first came together in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century to fight a war against a group of Ibibio people. Many of these masks are in the style of the Ibibio carving center Ikot Ekpene, although they may actually be locally made. |
