n.1.(Bot.) A genus of Asiatic and American magnoliaceous trees, having star-shaped fruit; star anise. The fruit of Illicium anisatum is used as a spice in India, and its oil is largely used in Europe for flavoring cordials, being almost identical with true oil of anise.

The species Illicium floridanum has maroon flowers.
Anise, Illicium florianum grows into small hedges in resorts like Sea Island, Georgia, and exotic red flowers and liquorish aromas rise from the leaves in the summer.
These characters were lengths of the dorsal fin base, the second dorsal ray (resulting in the development of the illicium and the esca), the snout (to accommodate the illicium), the esca, and the pectoral fin.
