The uncontained incineration of waste appears to be part of the military's standard operating procedure.
The process locks much of the carbon present in the waste into the soil conditioner for slow release to atmosphere over decades whereas alternative systems, such as incineration of waste or the production of fuel for power stations from waste, turn all of the carbon in waste to CO2 through the burning process, releasing it immediately to atmosphere.
The development of these technologies will eliminate the need for costly and unsustainable landfilling, as well as incineration of wastes formerly used at many sites.
