Malay Archipelago
An island group of southeast Asia between Australia and the Asian mainland and separating the Indian and Pacific oceans. It includes Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

The expression that did not last long was the Indian Archipelago that roughly signified the area we now call South East Asia including the Malay Peninsula and the archipelagos of Indonesia and the Philippines.
After returning to Britain, Earl described his travels in Borneo in his book: The Eastern Seas, or voyages and adventures in the Indian archipelago in 1832-33-34 (Earl 1837, reprinted 1971).
