The co-editors, Indianist Francine Frankel and China specialist Harry Harding, each contribute a chapter. Using her technique of showing how white "dreamers" (authors) use black characters in their "dreams" (texts) to play out particular anxieties, I will show how Ole Edvaard Rolvaag used Africanist and Indianist elements to reinforce or undermine the construction of whiteness in his Norwegian settlers and their Irish counterparts. But aside from an occasional anthropologist, there are few among the fraternity of Indianists who have spent any serious time among the destitute. |
