Like most artillery units' rotations to OIF, 2-77 Fires' mission emphasized owning battlespace and conducting maneuver operations rather than indirect fire support to maneuver operations.
My duties included coordinating indirect fire support for all of FOB 102's operational detachments that were spread throughout northern Iraq and coordinating and conducting counterstrikes for the base defense of FOB Hornbeck, the FOB 102 living area within LSA Diamondback.
A second difference is that the sea services require their controllers to practice coordinating live indirect fire support, such as artillery, but the Air Force does not.
