Previously all 25 EU members had voted in favor of Israel complying with the July 2004 International Court of Justice opinion that it return land, homes and other stolen Palestinian property and tear down the wall. Under the UN Charter, the General Assembly may ask the International Court of Justice for an advisory opinion on the status of the right to freedom of religion or belief, clarifying whether this right has attained the status of customary international law or is left to the interpretation of each State. Last year, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion that the construction of the wall on occupied territory violates international law. |
