interstellar medium  (ntr-stlr)
Material, mostly hydrogen gas, other gases, and dust, occupying the space between the stars and providing the raw material for the formation of new stars. Nebulae are the most distinct areas of the interstellar medium; they appear when the clouds of gas and dust cluster due to interaction with nearby stars or star remnants.

Now, a team led by John Debes at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, has found that a star's motion through interstellar gas can account for many of them.
Ultimately, astronomers may have the tools to document how interstellar gas and dust feed into the solar system and affect Earth's climate, says the University of Chicago's Priscilla C.
The stars' winds suggest they are just millions of years old, and their bow shocks suggest they are traveling through the interstellar gas at more than 180,000 kilometers per hour, about five times as fast as most young stars.
