Sojourner Truth, 1797-1883 BORN into slavery in New York as Isabella Baumfree, the mother of four escaped to become a prominent campaigner against the abolition of slavery and later for women's rights.
In 1843, Sojourner decided to abandon her slave name of Isabella Baumfree for her God-given name of Sojourner Truth.
Originally named Isabella Baumfree, Truth gained her freedom in 1828.
