The stimuli responding properties of PNIPA hydrogels can be modified in several ways, including the copolymerization of NIPA with comonomers, such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and itaconic acid (10-12), and the alteration of medium properties by adding surfactants, salts, or cosolvents (13-15).
Acid comonomers, particularly acrylic and methacrylic acids but also fumaric and itaconic acids, are very commonly added to latex recipes.
