FENBENDAZOLE TAB, TRICLABENDAZOLE BOLUS, IVERMECTIN
Control and elimination of this disease currently relies on mass annual or biannual drug administration with ivermectin
Campbell from Ireland and Japan's Satoshi Omura were each awarded a quarter share in the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work which led to the effective anti-parasitic drug, ivermectin
, which is helping to eradicate river blindness.
and Satoshi Omura of Kitasato University in Tokyo won half the prize for their work on ivermectin
, which combats roundworm infections.
It looked at 47 Welsh farms and the effectiveness of four types of wormer: Benzimidazole (1-BZ); Levamisole (2-LV); Ivermectin
(3-ML) and Moxidectin (3-ML).
Some 94% of farms showed evidence of anthelmintic resistance to Benzimidazole, 68% to Levamisole, 51% to Ivermectin
and 19% to Moxidectin.
The antibiotics were discontinued, and the route of the ivermectin
was changed to oral administration.
As a dewormer, the macrocyclic lactone ivermectin
(Ivomec) is considered to be the most effective against deer worm larvae that haven't yet crossed the bloodbrain barrier (see "Blood-Brain Barrier"on page 88).
The studies included 1,371 subjects randomized in a double-blind fashion 2:1 to 3 months of once-daily topical ivermectin
1% or vehicle.
Officials used a number of interventions to achieve elimination, including social mobilization, community engagement, improved sanitation and surveillance, and the administration of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin
In 1998, WHO initiated a global programme for elimination of lymphatic filariasis (GPELF) employing mass drug administration (MDA) of annual single dose of a combination of diethyl carbamazine citrate (DEC) (6 mg/kg) or Ivermectin
and Albendazole (400 mg) (7) and Albendazole/ Ivermectin
in the endemic areas where the disease is coendemic with onchocerciasis for at least five years (8).
Filariasis can be prevented using diethyl carbamazine, ivermectin
