Ivermectin first paralyzes the parasite, then kills it.
These interventions include: cataract surgery to cure the eye disease related to ageing; prevention of trachoma; provision of the drug ivermectin for the treatment of the infectious disease river blindness; immunization against measles; provision of vitamin A supplements for the prevention of childhood blindness; and provision of eyeglasses.
Published July 21 in the Public Library of Science Neglected Tropical Diseases journal, the study found treatment with the medication ivermectin stopped further infections and transmission of onchocerciasis, or river blindness, in three specific areas in Africa where the disease has become endemic.
