The dances tend to commemorate island events, such as the circling of roosters before combat, the heated protests against the closing and consolidation of small island schools, or hopping about from island to island during the second Jacobite Rebellion (1745) in order to catch up with Bonnie Prince Charles, who fled for his life in a rowboat, dressed as the national heroine Flora Macdonald's Irish maid. These reached a climax with the unsuccessful Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, launched around the charismatic figure of Bonny Prince Charlie and ending with the Battle of Culloden. |
