Jammu and Kash·mir  (kshmîr, ksh-mîr) Popularly known as Kashmir
A former princely state of northern India and Pakistan. Part of the Mogul Empire after 1587, it was annexed by British India in 1846 and partitioned between India and Pakistan after fierce fighting (1947-1949). Both India and Pakistan have continued to claim jurisdiction over the whole territory.

Another interesting proposal was made by Babu Singh, finance minister of the government of Jammu and Kashmir, who suggested on June 9 that "the disputed territory" be made a federal entity with "foreign affairs and finance" under the joint control of India and Pakistan.
Thus thwarted, in the past decade and a half, Pakistan has used terror as an instrument of attempted change in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kashmiri Separatists does not put forward a significant re-reading of the origins or nature of the conflict over Kashmir or the insurgency against the Indian government that has been raging in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989.
