By the terms of partition, jawans (young men) and officers of the Raj's army were given the choice of joining the forces of India or Pakistan.
Morale is very low, and there have been several notorious My Lai, Vietnam-type incidents where Indian jawans (soldiers) have gone beserk and opened fire on innocent Kashmiri civilians.
Tanks should not have been used and jawans should have been deployed with more concern regarding their survival.
