A river, about 805 km (500 mi) long, of eastern Brazil flowing northeast and east to the Atlantic Ocean.

Workers are often migrants from the Northeast or from the Valley of Jequitinhonha in Minas Gerais, transported by middlemen who select cheap labor for the plantations.
The city of Diamantina, Minas Geraes, was positioned in the middle of the most industrious field, the diamonds being found primarily in the gravel and sand of the Rio Jequitinhonha and Rio Doce.
