Armstrong became a master of this style in his early years playing with Joe "King" Oliver, and Stripling, Peplowski and Holloway showed how exciting this style can be.
He poured in the Mississippi River, put in the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs, let in a little Mozart, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky, then added some more, which was Bessie Smith, Lil Harden, his grandmother Josephine, Joe "King" Oliver, and the Karnofskys.
Growing up fatherless in New Orleans (in contrast to Whiteman's childhood under a dictatorial father in Denver), Armstrong found "father figures" who provided him with guidance and opportunities, including Joe "King" Oliver and his eventual manager Joe Glazer.
