in 1951 Mary White Ovington (1865-1951) A journalist and social worker who believed passionately in racial equality and helped found the NAACP Joel Elias Spingarn (1875-1939) In response to negative media images of blacks, he endowed the prestigious Springarn medal, awarded annually since 1915 to highlight black achievement Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) Writer, activist, lecturer, advocate for racial justice and women's rights, in America and abroad.
They are all among the 83 recipients of the NAACP's highest honor--the Spingarn Medal, an award instituted in 1914 by the late Joel Elias Spingarn, then chairman of the nation's most important civil rights organization.
Sidney Smith noted in Lady Holland's Memoirs: "As the French say, there are three sexes--men, women, and clergymen' " Joel Elias Spingarn added in Creative Criticism and Other Essays: "The gibe of European scholars is that there are three sexes in America--men, women, and professors.
