| Velasquez takes inspiration from Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, the famous 17th-century Mexican nun and poet credited as being the first feminist in North America. Through dance, Gallego's high school students learned about the lives and work of five notable Hispanic women including painter Frida Kahlo; Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, who became a nun in order to get an education; and Digna Ochoa, the human rights lawyer who was assassinated in 2001. The play, tutoring October 25 through December 14 at the Hollywood Court Theater in Los Angeles, is based on Alicia Gaspar de Alba's novel Sor Juana's Second Dream, about the real-life Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (played by Nanin), a 17th-century Mexican nun of such cultural impact that her face is now on the 200-peso bill. |
