The Muslims consider the Kaa'ba to be the centre of the Islamic world and every pious act, particularly prayer, is directed towards it.
Only recently, extensive fourteenth-century structures around the Kaa'ba at Mecca were demolished, without protest, to provide better facilities for pilgrims.
On the wall would have been photographs of the King and the Kaa'ba, and an elaborate calligraphic rendering of the Bas'm'Allah in a gilded frame.
