Kal·mar  (kälmär, kl-)
A city of southeast Sweden on Kalmar Sound, an arm of the Baltic Sea between the Swedish mainland and Öland. An important trade center since the eighth century, the city was the site of the Union of Kalmar (1397), which joined Sweden, Denmark, and Norway into a single monarchy that lasted until 1523. Population: 61,300.

The former Coventry Climax, now known as Kalmar Ltd, has played a large part in the city's manufacturing industry since the 1900s, producing forklift trucks, fire pumps and speciality engines.
