| Before beginning this discussion, appropriate protocols such as karakia (prayer) and mihi (introduction of self and origins) were observed. The powhiri and karakia by well known Christchurch kaumatua "Aunty Jane" (Heeni Phillips) was answered by 51 five to seven year olds from Addington Primary School's English as a second language class. It is suggested that appropriate support and processes such as karakia (prayer or blessing) are necessary to lift the tapu associated with research encounters and protect the personal safety of the researchers. |
