Officials said a winter sports stadium would be part of an "ice palace" in the capital Ashgabat, located in the scorching Karakum Desert where temperatures regularly reach over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
In October 2002, I headed for Ashgabat, crossing the Karakum desert by bus.
